In a freshly published personal account, named Ithaki, the ex- premier Tsipras spares no criticism as he examines that turbulent era during Greece's economic turmoil.
An Unconventional Appointment
As per the ex-PM's version, Tsipras chose that maverick economist Varoufakis to be his treasury head largely due to the latter's worldwide fame along with his very persuasive abilities as a public orator.
“He was, actually, more of a celebrity rather than an economist,” stated the 51-year-old.
Conflicting Priorities
The former leader alleges how Varoufakis had his own agenda which included advancing his publications as well as testing out his theories using the nation rather than genuinely fighting for its financial survival.
Tsipras noted how the discussions to stave off insolvency were “not only a way of achieving a better deal for the country. They were an experiment, an historic opportunity to prove the validity of his ideas.”
Critical Negotiations
Amid tense negotiations, Greece came dangerously close to exiting the eurozone.
At stake was not only the country's future but also the harsh austerity policies demanded in return for financial aid from foreign lenders.
Unsuccessful Options
Efforts to secure financing from other sources, including an urgent plea to the Kremlin to purchase Greek government bonds, went unanswered.
Assisting the indebted country would be equivalent to throwing money into the garbage, the Russian leader is reputed to have told Tsipras during their meeting.
Public Vote and Reversal
In July 2015, the excoriating conditions were subjected to a public vote, an action which plunged Europe into deeper crisis of identity.
Although the referendum was carried decisively by those who opposed austerity, the prime minister had little option but to reject its outcome and agree to a bailout package from foreign lenders which turned out to be tougher.
Final Straw
The ex-PM claimed that he started questioning Varoufakis relatively soon.
“He was the face of negotiation, the man who attracted publicity, who appeared on the covers of publications the world over … it seemed he relished his new role.”
After the minister proposed a contingency plan involving establishing a secondary currency as well as issuing coupons to pensioners, the leader said he realised that it was the end questioning Varoufakis: “Is this for real?”
Lasting Criticism
Within the book, the author asserts that his former ally had proved himself to be “unfit for an agreement demanding complex and sensitive management.”
Tsipras further claimed how Varoufakis's confrontational style left him increasingly isolated with colleagues, endangered the country, while helped hawks who were pushing for Grexit.
The retelling of events has provoked anger and stunned disbelief in some quarters, while the former minister has so far maintained a conspicuous quiet on the matter.
