"Any idea when you're speaking to Haim?" a text arrives. "I was hoping to ask if I can join as their fourth member."

However, there remains a key snag: The sender also desires to be Haim's additional sibling. And we're not alone. Several celebrated supporters have openly begged for the honor.

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path playing gigs at small eateries with their parents. Now they're multiple Grammy Award nominees.

In the tradition of the most iconic groups, they're a tight-knit gang. Their videos often feature them striding in harmony down the roads of Los Angeles. In concert, they perform with such boundless happiness you can't help but think, "I'd love to be part of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that young girls came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a drum kit'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "That's the greatest compliment. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire young girls to make music."

Historic Milestone

The trio are speaking from home, where they're taking a pause after an major tour in for their latest album, I Quit.

They're presently processing the news it's been in the running for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in the running for the prize.

"I tune into the announcements every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," explains Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the accolade isn't lost on the trio.

"We truly set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a major achievement," continues Alana. "But we're just grateful for the female artists that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Candor

The project emerged from a time of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music explores that odd in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The lyrics track departures and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the relationships they've had. You can hear them determining in the moment who they want to be.

"I adore way of putting it, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a personal statement. You have to consciously practice shutting out the criticism and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Refinement of Music

That newfound resilience demanded a different sonic direction – more unpolished and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that started with the drums.

"Drums are such a nuanced thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound."

Stories and Collective Camaraderie

The trio's honesty shaped the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters disclosed some of their dating tales.

Someone broke up with Este over a health concern. Alana shared a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"Experiencing these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's incredible."

An Assured Path

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. These days, Haim are more assured of their standing in the industry.

They're major draws, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide fan base.

But the band will always be their number one commitment.

"My sisters and I have been playing music since I was little," shares Alana. "It's like no other path that we were destined for. And I'm really fortunate we've made it and we're still going strong."
